Located in Ashe County, North Carolina, River House restaurant is a hidden gem. Perched above the New River, this inn offers guests a peaceful setting and an amazing fine dining restaurant. Guests can also rent inner tubes to kayak down the river.

River House restaurant was designed by award-winning chef John Varanese. Varanese studied under the top chefs in France. He then worked in four-star restaurants in San Francisco.

The restaurant has a great wine list. It features French-American hybrid grapes grown on the property. The wines range from dry to sweet. You can also sample a variety of local foods.

The restaurant offers a four-course Chef’s choice menu. You can also enjoy live music and art displays. The Sunday salon lineup includes a discussion over a four-course dinner, as well as poetry readings and theatrical performances.

The inn also features five guest rooms, each with private bath. There are several antiques and art pieces that add a warm homey touch to each room. The rooms have mullioned windows, rustic design, and French doors that open seasonally. The kitchen is well-appointed with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. The kitchen has a large walk-in pantry.

The restaurant also features a raw bar. You can order a variety of raw oysters. The dining room is open seven days a week for lunch. The restaurant seats 330 in the main dining room, as well as on the patio. The dining room features a floor-to-ceiling glass wall. The dining room has a fireplace.

The innkeeper, Gayle Winston, was born in Ashe County. Her family owned the property. She purchased it in 1973, and moved back to Ashe County. Winston’s farm grew to 1,000 acres. Her farm supported 350 head of beef cattle. She also worked as a school teacher and librarian.
